Gradient Coating
Smooth ombre colour transitions for contemporary and luxury glass bottle designs.
What Is Gradient Coating?
Gradient coating, also known as ombre coating, creates a smooth colour transition on glass bottles that fades from one colour to another or from colour to clear glass. This contemporary decoration technique delivers a visually striking effect that is both elegant and distinctive, making it increasingly popular among luxury fragrance and home fragrance brands.
The gradient effect is achieved through a controlled spray process where paint is applied with varying intensity across the bottle surface. The transition can run from bottom to top, top to bottom, or centre outward, depending on the desired design. Single-colour gradients (fading from solid colour to clear glass) are the most common, but two-colour and multi-colour gradients are also available for more dramatic effects.
Gradient coating works particularly well on taller bottle formats where the extended surface area allows the colour transition to develop fully. It is equally effective on cylindrical, square, and shaped bottles. The technique pairs well with screen printing, hot stamping, and partial frosting, allowing for layered designs that combine colour gradients with branded elements.
The Process
Colour & Gradient Design
The gradient direction, colour palette, and transition profile are defined. A sample is produced for your approval to ensure the gradient matches your vision before production begins.
Spray Setup & Calibration
Spray equipment is calibrated to deliver the graduated paint application. The angle, distance, and flow rate are precisely set to achieve a smooth, even transition.
Gradient Application
Bottles are sprayed with the graduated colour, building the transition from solid coverage to transparency. Multiple passes may be required for optimal smoothness and colour depth.
Curing & Inspection
Coated bottles are cured to harden the finish. Each bottle is inspected for gradient smoothness, colour accuracy, and consistency across the batch.
