Acid Etching

Chemical frosting for a permanently textured surface with a premium tactile feel.

What Is Acid Etching?

Acid etching, also known as chemical frosting, is a glass decoration technique that creates a permanently frosted surface by treating the glass with a chemical solution. The result is a soft, translucent finish with a distinctive tactile quality that conveys elegance and sophistication. It is one of the most enduring and premium finishes available for glass bottles.

Unlike spray-applied frosted coatings, acid etching modifies the glass surface itself, producing a texture that cannot be scratched off or worn away. The frosted effect is uniform, delivering a consistent finish across flat, curved, and complex bottle profiles. The technique can be applied to the entire bottle surface for a fully frosted appearance, or selectively using masking to create patterns, logos, and decorative motifs in frosted and clear zones.

Acid-etched glass has a luxurious hand-feel that appeals to consumers of premium fragrance and beauty products. The frosted surface diffuses light beautifully, creating a soft glow that enhances shelf presence. It works as a standalone decoration or as a base layer for additional techniques such as hot stamping, screen printing, or electroplating.

The Process

1

Design & Masking

If selective frosting is required, a resist mask is applied to the areas that will remain clear. Full-surface etching requires no masking. Your design determines the frosted and clear zones.

2

Chemical Treatment

Bottles are immersed in or sprayed with a controlled acid solution that reacts with the glass surface. The treatment time determines the depth and texture of the frosted finish.

3

Neutralisation & Cleaning

After the desired frosting depth is achieved, bottles are neutralised and thoroughly cleaned to halt the chemical reaction and remove any residue.

4

Quality Inspection

Each bottle is inspected for frost consistency, pattern accuracy (if masked), and surface uniformity. Approved bottles proceed to packaging or the next decoration stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between acid etching and spray frosting?

Acid etching modifies the glass surface itself, creating a permanent frost that cannot be scratched or worn away. Spray frosting applies a coating to the surface which, while durable, is a separate layer rather than a modification of the glass. Acid etching delivers a more premium tactile quality.

Can acid etching create patterns and logos?

Yes, by applying a resist mask before the etching process, we can create designs where some areas are frosted and others remain clear. This produces elegant branded patterns, logos, and decorative motifs directly in the glass surface.

Is acid etching suitable for candle jars?

Absolutely. Acid-etched candle jars diffuse the candlelight beautifully, creating a soft, ambient glow. The frosted finish also provides an excellent surface for additional branding through screen printing or hot stamping.

How durable is acid-etched glass?

Acid etching is permanent. Because the treatment modifies the glass surface rather than adding a coating, the frosted finish is extremely durable. It will not scratch, peel, or degrade over time.

What are the MOQs for acid-etched bottles?

MOQs start from 500 units. If masking is required for pattern work, a small tooling charge applies to cover the creation of the resist masks.
